June 1 marked the centennial of the cultural phenomenon that is Marilyn Monroe. The Plaza Classic pays tribute to the icon by presenting one of her lesser-known, yet widely praised performances for the first time. Based on a William Inge play of the same name, the film tells the story of Bo, a sheltered young cowboy (Don Murray in his film debut) who journeys from Montana to Phoenix for a rodeo and to hopefully find his first lady love. He meets the beautiful Cherie (Monroe), a saloon singer who has dreams of journeying to Hollywood. Immediately smitten, Bo wants to take Cherie back to Montana with him, ignorant of how a man should behave around any woman, much less the more experienced Cherie. This is a rare chance to see Marilyn Monroe playing a much earthier character in a much more dramatic film. — Jack Fields
