El Paso Choral Society Presents the New Year Music Festival at the Abraham Chavez Theatre December 7, 2017

The El Paso Choral Society presents a New Year Music Festival with orchestra and professional soloists at the Abraham Chavez Theatre: the holiday favorite and family-friendly opera Amahl and the Night Visitors and the Viennese New Year’s Concert. Both performances will be at the Abraham Chavez Theatre.

The Music Festival starts off with Amal and The Night Visitors (Opera) on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 7:30PM. The story centers around a Shepard boy named Amahl, who attempts to tell his mother about an unusual start that he has seen outside. Through his generosity and selflessness, all become witness to a miracle. This fully-staged opera is a heartwarming holiday tradition.

The Viennese New Year’s Concert closes out 2017 on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 7:30PM. with an evening of waltzes, including the Blue Danube, popular arias including Nessun Dorma, and Juliet’s Waltz and an exciting chorus.

This festive music will be performed by the 100-voice El Paso Chorale, professional orchestra, and professional soloists. Prentice Loftin, EPCS Music Director, will conduct. The orchestra concertmaster will be Dr. Stephanie Meyers. The soloists will be Laquita Mitchell, soprano; Dinyar Vania, tenor; Levi Hernandez, Baritone; and Brian Kontes, bass. They have performed with the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and many others.

The El Paso Chorale has been performing the major choral/orchestral works in El Paso for over 70 years. Its repertoire includes the Requiems by Mozart, Verdi, and Durufle, Beethoven’s Ninth, Missa Somemnes, Mass in C, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, Poulenc’s Gloria, and Bach’s St. John Passion. The El Paso Chamber Choir, which performs with the Chorale, was formed in 1995 and became the professional core group of singers for the larger performances by the Chorale. The Chamber Choir was also the opera chorus in 27 opera productions with El Paso Opera. Both choirs have performed many times with the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, Las Cruces Symphony, and the Juarez Symphony.
